So me and some buddies are chillen around the house talking about prerunners "I plan on building one already going to buy the 2001 ranger" and I think if your going to have a real prerunner race ready you should have a standard tranny or a auto with a shift kit and slap shifter all my friends keep saying auto all the way help with this please.

It's really preference/opinion between auto or stick shift, although I'd say if you're planning on racing you should build the tranny to match no matter what it is. Personally I would rather have an automatic so I have more coordination power to focus on driving and not crashing :icon_thumby: Stick shift would probably be less expensive to build too. And really I wouldn't think the power loss from the auto would be that much of an issue since traction is always a bigger battle :icon_twisted: So I'd say it's up to the person building the truck :]

Shifting is funner......... that's about as technical as I get.

If your running a turbo then you want auto so you don't get turbo lag.

Auto with a lock out shifter just like all our trophy trucks and pre-runners. turbo 400's wont let you down and there cheap but i dont if you can mate that to a ford engine

Manual for sure less likely to break and if you loose a gear usually the others will still work to get you back to base.

true story a buddy of mine has an old nissan pickup that lost fourth gear. luckily its a five speed so he just revs third a little higher and skips fourth straight to fifth gear. it would cost more than his truck is worth to fix it so drive it til it dies

:icon_rofl:That's a thing of the past.

I say go with a Manual as it's lighter and less likely to leave you stranded.

Maybe with twins...... but my manual would turbo lag between shifts, sometimes bark if I let loose at 55-70psi but I had to shift slow I was running a dual disc clutch.

the only down fall with a stick/clutch is that there is no "slip" to buffer the shock loads like there is with a T/C

There is a adapter to put a 700r4 behind a 4.0L, and since chevy lept the same bell housing pattern on all motors, good chance it would work with a th400 as well.
