Premium Sound

Hey no problem Rob, glad I could help.

Ay-Yi -Yi - I had some time today to start pulling junk out of my dash. Pulled the radio and couldn't find the amp. Did you have an extra removeable plate on top of the dash? That's what it looked like on your pics. A couple of days ago, I was searching on TRS and somebody said that you could tell if your sound system was premium by the # on the radio. Mine says "87 39 E77F-19B132-AA" Model PU-9137A. Of course, I tried to go back and re-search with no luck. HELP!

Here is some of what I know about Ford stereos. Generally, all of the basic stereos from 1986 and on have the same two connectors on the back, one for the speakers and one for everything else (power, ground, antenna, lighting, etc.). Both connectors have 7-8 flat pins in a straight line. The one true Premium system with a separate amplifier I have removed used a different connector from the radio/tuner to the amplifier. That connector had something like two rows of four pins. It was on a 1994 Mercury Sable.

One way you can probably test to see if you have a separate amp is to put an ohmmeter on the pair of wires going to each speaker, which should display 4-10 ohms each. If your truck has that 8-pin inline connector, it is the four speakers (one pair for each) in line. You can check the wiring diagrams for your truck (if you have them, or if they are here in the tech library or elsewhere online) if you need to.

Another idea is to just call Crutchfield and ask them to help you. They are a great company to work with, and you might get a good stereo and speakers from them.

DOH - great suggestion on ohming the speaker wires. I'll try that ASAP. I have used Crutchfield before and never had any problems. But when I enter my truck info it, it only comes up with some $699 speakers for the front. That's about $699 more than I spent for the truck!!

Yes, there is a little trap door on top of the dash Rob. If you dont have it you may not have an amp. (not 100% positive tho)

ChrisW6ATV you pegged it:headbang:. I've got ~3-4 ohms between each adjacent wire on one connector - so I'm pretty darn sure they're going to the speakers. NOW - anybody got 4" speaker suggestions for the dash? I can fab up about any kind of adapter plates to get from the stock 3-hole mount to the standard 4 hole mount. Gotta love access to milling machines at work!

alpines type r's or s's are a nasty 4inch coax
