I'm floored by the horror.
Keep in mind, though, people creating such horror aren't a sign of the times or a new thing. We have the internet now and everyone, everywhere sees it, and immediately. Don't despair of mankind because of this. It's important to focus on the miscreants and crush them. Don't look at them and use them to represent all of us.
Look up H. H. Holmes, the 1893 Chicago World's Fair serial killer if you want a snippet of old horror. The list is endless though. And you've never heard about them. It's because the world isn't going to hell in a handbasket, whatever a handbasket is. The human brain can only absorb so much crap and is easily, and temporarily, swayed by what it sees.
For the sake of survivability, our brain can quickly adjust to new situations. It's how hostages and prisoners and maroonees make it through traumatic ordeals. You get blasted by a bunch of shitty news stories and your mind quickly adjusts you to live in a world of shit. But the world isn't really shit. The vast, vast, vast majority of people had a regular day.
The Golden Rule is what you have to live by. When you drive, for instance, remember that there are people in those other cars. Show them courtesy and understanding and it will improve their outlook. We are too used to seeing the other cars as obstacles to be cursed. There are a lot of things--personal device things and phones etc--that move our attention from the world around us to some e-world. What is going on inside the Droid becomes more real than what is going on outside of it. It makes us disassociate real things with e-things. It's both a good thing and a bad thing. Eventually, I think we will end up in The Matrix. We are more mind than body. But for the time being, we need to remember that there is a physical world where people have pain.
Protect everyone, even when they don't know what the hell you are talking about. Don't retaliate when a person is rude to your car because they don't understand there is a person operating it. See other people as you see yourself--not as annoying obstacles. This girl is a victim of this un-reality. On the computer, you don't have to be what you don't want to be. Just have it your way and delete. It doesn't transfer into life.
Horror, though, is less frequent than it used to be. It is very much on the decline.
