I am thinking about installing a powertrax locker in my ranger. I have never worked on diffs before.I found a tag that says v316a 10 88 6j18 and wondering what that means.Also what is the difference between the lock right and no slip? Will this work on my truck with "one tire fire" or is this an upgrade for limited slip?Lastly is this something I can do in my backyard?

Thanks

with moderate skills can be done in about 2 hours.its designed for an open diff and cant be used with a limited slip. theres a great tech write up in the tech library on how to install.

check the tech library for converting the codes from your tag. the LockRight is NOT a limited slip. it will lock both axles together when one of the tires looses traction. a limited slip just transfers the power from the slipping wheel to the other one. works well most of the time, but there are situations where you may be hung up and the l/s is useless.
if you are mechanically inclined, you can install the LockRight yourself. the instructions are pretty good. spiders come out and the locker goes in. no gears to be set up or anything like that.
iirc, the LockRight and the No Slip are very similar in design and function.

Limited slip is usually clutch packs that slip when cornering but with the proper amount of torque on them they will lock up and cause both tires to spin. I don't know how torsen limited slip works.

A power trax is supposed to do something similar.

V316A have no clue, some code for the axle builder at the plant. Then you "10 88 6J18"
Look in front of the "10" and you may see a "4" meaning you have a 4.10 gear. the "88" means it is an 8.8 ring gear. The "6J18" Means that the axle was built in 6-18-2006,
6=month
J=year
18=day

the LockRight is NOT a limited slip. it will lock both axles together when one of the tires looses traction.

actually the way a locker works is that it is locked all of the time unless you are coasting around a corner. if you are in the gas it will lock up even in a corner.

there are "lunch box" lockers like the Lock Rite that can be used in a L/S Carrier....

I don't know how torsen limited slip works.

the Torsen is a gear driven L/S.....but you can still get only one tire to spin in some extreme situations....

what he said^^^^^^

The "Lock-rite" is meant more for off road use and runs about $200 cheaper than the "No-silp" that is more street friendly. Not hard at all with the common hand tools and a couple of jack stands. Two hours to do mine and that included 30 mins looking for one of the little springs that popped out. Clue I learned is to mark how the teeth go together, they fit only one way. I painted index marks to make it easier. Your hands will be greasy and easy to have the teeth slip out of postion.

So I tried to order my locker and my local auto store said there is no such thing as a "no-slip" and there is only the lock-right and powertrax. I will asume that powertrax is the no-slip, but he also told me that they don't make it for my ranger. I have a 2007 with 8.8 ring, 28 spline, and 4:10 ratio and he said it will only work with 2001's and under. If anyone knows the part number I need for the no-slip that would help me out alot. Thanks for all the info guys.

Wrong auto store! Don't think Richmond has upgraded their catalog to show the latest years. Have no idea why one from a 2000 won't work. Any way, Powertrax does come in both flavors. Richmond has a tech line in one of these. Happy reading!

thanks for the links mac. I just want to confirm that my truck has 28 spline before I order. My wieght limit is 2750 so is that 28 spline?

It's only the FX4's that ever got the 31 spline axle.

I have a 28 spline 8.8 that was originally a limited slip. I put in the powertrax no slip and it is awesome! You will definitely enjoy having both tires transferring power. Just make sure if you have a open or l/s axle currently you buy the correct locker for it. Also my powertrax no slip was picky on the gear oil, it didn't like synthetic for whatever reason.

Just finished installing my no-slip and went for a test drive. It took me 4 hours from start to finish. That included me cleaning out my shop first and the hour for the rtv to cure. When I backed out of my shop it was loud when it was disengaging but only after 30 min I can hardly hear it. Did a brake stand on some gravel to see it at work. You cant beat this locker for the money and install. I want to thank everyone for the great info on this web site.

This might void my warrenty :)

Elaborate on why your powertrax didn't like synthetic?

I have a no-slip for a l/s 28 spline carrier and Ive run synthetic/non-synthetic and can't tell the difference. Only difference I can tell is when you use thicker or thiner gear oil muffles the sounds it makes more or less.
