Power steering

Hey this is my first thread. I own a 1993 2.3L 4x4 Ranger XL and my power steering pump is really loud and i didnt know if it was getting old and i should replace it or just low on fluid???

Look inside... Is it low on fluid? There should be a dipstick attached to the cap. If its low it will make noise. If its full and making noise, it may be wearing out.

Well if its not low then i more than likely need a new pump and pulley??

Does it make an almost grinding noise? Mine does that too, but it isn't very loud.

Yeah I suppose that would be a better descriptor. But yes, mine does that too. Maybe I'll make a video for you to show you how loud mine is. It's been like that since June, and hasn't affected anything.

ford pumps make a whine.something about the design..........I would flush the fluid out......if you don't want to bother with a flush........suck the fluid out with a turkey baster and a tube.......then fill it up. do this a few times and it will be clean........use Mercon atf..........if you do think you need a pump they are cheap.........if you get one with a pulley already on it you do not need to deal with swapping the pully......it is an easy install......

it's not that easy.. haha. Even for someone who knows what they are doing with the right tools, it's an hour minimum. You don't need a new pulley, but you will need a pulley puller/installer. if it's not outrageously loud, don't mess with it. my brand new napa pump is louder than my 16 year old stock one was. and the first one i got from napa was bad right out of the box and howled to the moon.
