Power steering questions

I have a 1990 Ford ranger. The power steering is leaking somewhere. I'm guessing that the power steering pump is leaking somewhere because of the fluid underneath that area. Is this a common issue on these things? What is it that causes them to leak? Is it easy to remove and replace on my own?
