the shaft on my power steering pump moves in and out is that normal. my belt started to sqeek and that is what i found. Please help. I already changed tensioner pulley and belt

I don't know how much movement is normal,,,,,,,If it's making noise....you ought to replace it.......

A little 2mm movement is ok. 1/4"......not so much.

You don't have anything leaking on this belt, do you? Coolant?

How about the idler pulley? EVERYTHING turns ok?

Sure it's not the alternator, or a/c compressor squeaking?

everything turns smooth. I was going to replace the power steering pump but I looked at my buddys bronco II and it moves as much as mine. I dont see any leaks but I will look for leaks again.

is the belt new? is it a motorcraft belt? or a brand name belt?
I know the cheapo belts squeek/slip like a MOFO and the motorcraft and brandname do not squeak.

I have the same issue. Someone suggested to me that tensioner pulley may stick too far forward toward the radiator, causing the belt to rub against the water pump pulley or the crankshaft pulley. Went and held a flat edge to the two pulleys and compared it to the one on the tensioner. The tensioner pulley sticks forward about 1/8th of an inch. I don't know if this is the source of the problem or what because I never got around to doing anything about it. Just learned to live with the squeal. But it definitely gets worse in cold, wet weather. If you pour water or oil on the belt, the squeal will go away for a few seconds and then come right back. Let me know if you end up fixing yours and what you did.

spray water on the belt while the engine is running, if the noise goes away its the belt itself or pulley alignment, if it does not stop then its probably a bearing on the tensioner or idler

With the belt off check all the pullys make sure the berings are all good and they turn easy alternator, water pump, steering, A/C, idler/s. Are you putting enough tension on the belt it may not be tight enough a belt tension guage would be handi to further diagnose and using a long screwdriver you can listen to the bearings while it is running you will be able to isolate a bad bering once you know what to listen for. Be careful of moving parts. I`m sure you can find specs on end play on the pump if you look but it should be very little it could be a bushing in the pump itself. Maybe look at a new/rebuilt one at the part store and see how tight it is.

After 3 hrs of trying to find the squeak I pulled the tensioner pulley and tried to shim it out. I could not find anyhting to shim it with in my garage. Put it all back together and said screw it ill deal with it. I started it and no squeak. That was 3 days ago and still no squeak. So who knows what the hell it was.

It sounds to me that the tensioner assembly is worn out. Did you replace just the pulley or the whole assembly.
