My wife has a 97 Ranger 2.3L 2wd auto, and last night her power steering stopped working. I checked the fluid and it was empty. She probably drove about 15 miles on the highway with no fluid. I bought power steering fluid and it took about 3/4 quart to fill it, and I drove around for about 6 miles to work it in. I see know that I was supposed to use ATF. Now the pump is really loud, and I see where the leak is. It's from a line coming off the pump.
The leak is coming from the really rusty part of the lower line right by where the sensor is in the pic, and it squirts out with a lot of pressure.
Questions:
1.I will put in ATF after I change the line, but did the PSF damage the pump even though I only drove for about 6 miles with it?
2.Is the pump likely damaged because wifey drove with really low fluid for a while?
3.Where can I buy another line cheap? Is this the high pressure line?
4.Will it be pretty easy to change the line myself with basic hand tools? It looks like the lower part of the line is going to be a pain to reach with a wrench.
5.What is that sensor for?
Thanks guys, your help is really appreciated. We are in college and this truck just has to last us another year, and I am trying to fix it on the cheap.
