Hey!

Bought this 97 4x2 4cyl ranger the other day, and it's got a massive leak of p/s fluid from the high pressure metal hose, which is broken. The previous owner admittedly didn't fix it at any point in the past when this problem developed. It's a hose on the driver's side of the engine, that the parts stores quote $22-$28 for. How difficult would this be to do myself? Thinking about having it shop done, but if it's super easy, I might do it myself.
Any thoughts?

You'll need a new hi pressure line, some atf to top up the steering pump, and then its just a matter of undoing the flare nut on each end of the line and replacing it. Shouldn't take more than a half hour.

Well, now my dad is going to help. He's pretty smart, so I have faith we can do this. Will post some results :)

Just make sure you use a line (flare nut) wrench, or your new line will leak too.

It's not a difficult job, but it's messy as heck. Make sure you bleed it SLOWLY with the engine OFF or you'll get Annoying Ford Power Steering Whine (tm) if you don't already have it.

I've noticed people have recommended atf versus general power steering fluid in the Ford pumps. Is the atf what's supposed to be used, or does it work better than regular power steering pump fluid?

Pete

Its what ford specifies in their trucks...ATF Type F for up to 95, 96+ use Mercon ATF.
