Hey guys, i am having an issue with my power steering on my truck. Today i flushed the power steering out, and filled with new, got all the air bled out, when i got done i parked the truck, and when i was parking it started shuddering real bad. So i checked the fluid and it was low, so i put some in, drove it around and it got better, now when i turn right real slow it shudders, but doesn't do it on left turns or so i haven't noticed. I just wanting to know what i did wrong, and how can i fix it, so if anybody has any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

PS when the truck is running the fluid level is fine, but when the truck is off the fluid level raises. Thanks.

Do you have that hydraulic assist rack setup like my 99 Ranger? If so that needs to be bled or repaired. I can't remember if the 98 had this setup or not. On mine, if you turn the steering wheel a few times without the motor running you get a shimmy feel on the steering wheel and some vibration until it settles down. Ford told me about it after I brought it in due to the shimmy. My Ford dealer bled the system for me and it was fine after that.

I bought my Ranger new in 99 and I wanted to move my truck up and over a bit to do some work in my garage on one of my bikes and turned the steering wheel when I pushed my truck up and around the garage. I then got in it to go get some bike parts and the shimmy started. It startled me at first and the it went away after a few miles. The next time I did the same thing and I thought I need to take it in to the dealer to see what was wrong. I don't do that anymore and I never had that shimmy again.

When I replaced my rack I filled the reservoir with fluid to the max and jacked up the front so the front tires were off the ground. I turned the key to the on position and turned the wheel all the way left, then all the way to the right while I had someone else watch the fluid level. As it got lower they added some. After adding quite a bit of fluid I started the truck and continued to do it until the shuddering went away.

This is how i did it.

Sounds like you still have some air in the system. Bleed it running and turn it over onto the locks.

had this happen before, bleeding it should solve the problem!, :icon_thumby:
