Coming back from the mountains going around tight corners I would get a squeel and. Every once in awhile I would lose power steering for a split second. This could be the factory pump. I'm betting the pump is finally quitting.

Good time for a Saginaw pump?

Went out to pull the power steering off and noticed the belt was lose. Go to the passenger side and noticed the belt tensioner pulley is gone. There's metal parts where the pulley should be. Driving back from the mountains we smelled burning plastic.

I am no expert, but I think that is a problem.

What would cause the pulley to do that? My brother in law was the last one to pull the belt off. Maybe he didn't get it back on right?

Maybe parts (bearings) just wore out? (bearing ran dry, overheated & disintegrated?)

Get a new belt & pulley and be done with it. Might as well replace the idler pulley (or it's bearings) as well, since it's time may be running out also.
