Power Steering Gear Pitman Arm Seal Question.

Yea i realized i put this under axle instead of steering but still...holyshit 42 views not one damn answer? i guess ill just have to tear into and take a damn guess at which pitman seal kit i need... :annoyed:
 
arent' they only a couple bucks? why not just get both? I think mine's leaking and need to do the same but haven't gotten that far yet.
 
Yea there about 8 bucks, but thats just what i need is to take a guess on which one and it be the wrong one then have to drive another vehicle to get the other one..figured somebody would know or if there was 2 different gear boxes...suppose im gonna just buy both then return whichever one i didnt need...:dntknw:
 
they're both under $5.50 each on Rock Auto... I'm tempted to grab one.
 
As far as I know, ALL rangers to 1997 and 80-96 F150's use the same exact steering box.
 
That's correct, all rbv's that didn't use a rack, and all f series truck, 150, 250, and 350 from 80-97 (excluding newer body style) all used the same gearbox...

Well then that makes it even more confusing, same gear box why the hell is there 2 different options then? Unless they will maybe both work? no idea.

I saw rockauto had it cheaper but you gotta figure shipping, with autozone or something its a little bit more but no shipping and i could return whichever one i didnt need, i dont know what else to do at this point.
 
when I was on Rock Auto it showed the picture of both, one looked to have two seals and a clip, the other one seal and the clip...
 
I haven't seen the seals you talking about, but different companies makes different types of seals. They look different (1 piece vs 2 piece, etc) but most likely either will work for the same application...

Thats kind of what i was thinking also hopefully ill get a chance to mess with it here soon, ill make sure to post my results if they both work on only one of them.
 
Post up the pics of both seals if you go that route so the rest of us will have an idea :icon_thumby:

Just did this on our '89. 8779 is if your only working on it from the pitman arm side. 8778 has an extra seal that is for the top cap (where the adjuster with jam nut is located). If you plan to pull the pitman shaft out from the top to replace the seal then get the 8778. I was able to get the seals replaced with the 8779 but after I did that the input side of the box started leaking and I did a complete tear down and had to buy another kit for the whole box.

Ahhh alright now that makes sense, i wish it said that somewhere on the info when you went to order...ive been so busy i havent messed with it but its been colder and hasnt leaked as much, thanks i appreciate it ill get the 8778 when i do it.
