is there anyway i can get more power out of my 88 2.9
i had my motor rebuilt and put a flowmaster with no cat
and it out runs my friend 99 3.0 right now but i want it faster
so can anyone help me

the 2.9 is relatively tapped from the factory as far as output, its a 177ci engine that puts out 140hp and 170 ft-lbs of torque. tune it up and run it. there are modifications that you can do to get more power but they will raise your powerband and make the motor useless in a truck.

The 2.9 is a great motor. If you can beat a newer 3.0L truck with an older and more worked motor doesn't that say enough.

There is no good way to get anymore out of it than you already have, if you need more trade it in on a 4.0L or swap in a 5.0L.

wil a 4.6 out of a stang fit or a 4.0 or 5.0 be better for wheelin

Lots of pros/cons to each of the swaps...

4.6L is about as big as a BBF, 100lbs heavier than the 5.0L.. $$$ Nice that it's a modular engine, but fitment is not going to be simple. OBD-II is what would trouble me the most about the swap. I am thinking they make an intake for a carb for this motor, but it's probably extremely expensive and not worth the $$$.

4.0L would be cheapest and most strait forward. Not a HUGE aftermarket, but at least there's some stuff out there.. A Ranger came stock w/ 4.0L, so not much fabrication would be needed.

5.0L would be easier than 4.6L, push rod engine, lots of different options and a good aftermarket. More info on the swap out there, as this is a more common V8 swap. Carbing would be cheap, EFI would be a little more work and money, but I guess that choice would be yours. People love to argue which is better between the two, I'm leaving that alone. :)
