I have "found" crowbars, "inherited" crowbars and purchased crowbars. All good. I like Gorilla bars. Also, those prybars with the adjustable head by Gearwrench are awesome.

What is a shale bar?
I picture something about an 1" diameter and 6' long with one end pointy and the other end flattened.

Yea that pretty much sums up what a shale bar is. I think some people call it a digging bar. Around here it's used to make post holes in soil filled with shale... aka shale bar.

I have one or two of those. Can’t dig much of a hole in shale or hard clay without one

Yup. They make great pry bars for machines too. I own a Bridgeport (google it) and a lathe that weighs at least 4,000 lbs. I roll them around with my shale bar and 5/8 rod for rollers.
