Possible to get a CLEARCOAT ONLY paintjob?

Hmmm... I guess it could be clear... it seems to be more like a flaky powder than the peeling clear like on my BII though. Strange that Ford didn't identify it as a "clearcoat" in the brochures :icon_confused:
(only the metallics were marked as clearcoated (things like "Dark Green Metallic Clearcoat", etc.)

easiest way to determine this is to try wetstanding/buffing a small spot. If the residue is black, then its a single stage, if its white, its clearcoated.

yes its possible for a clearcoat only paint job..if your paint is DECENT enough under the clear..u can just color sand the clear down and simply take a tack cloth clean all surfaces tape off the truck and clear .

Jeez, when I first opened this I thought you were talking about clear coating bare sheet metal. Now THAT would be nice.

if you did that, you'd have to paint navy markings on it:

That would be Army, I don't think the Navy ever had natural finishes like that on their planes... probably due to cororsion. P-51's were never flown by the Navy either.

Me too. John DeLorean did that, and it looks cool. Sucks if you scratch it though.

very nice....youve proven i dont know squat about history ;missingteeth;

but still, if you clearcoated the metal, corrosion wouldnt be a problem...

I always wanted to do a muscle car in a bare metal look.. I would have to put metal rivets and bolts all over it though to complete the look. :icon_thumby:

True, but for zee eyes of zee wymins, it's better to have a Ferrari paint job than spray can camo... lol... though not NEARLY as good as having a FERRARI w/ a Ferrari paint job!:clapping:

ya just gots ta have a wymins like mine...she can't wait for me to get the bodywork done on the B2 so she can try her hand at spraying a chocolate chip cammo paintjob...yepp...she's a keeper :icon_hornsup:

The black and red trucks in the early 90's had clear coat as an option. My '93 is not clear.

If you buy your truck new, and are interested in protecting the paint for *relatively* cheap (compared to a new paint job), 3M has a clear film that you can have installed over the entire vehicle that can be peeled and reapplied as it gets damaged. They also have colored film so that you can change the appearance of the vehicle without the commitment of painting. Film is forgiving, paint is forever (or was it "diamonds are forever" I always mess those up ;) )

As long as nothing ever hits it yeah, but a fighter plane can get pretty dinged up, when the paint is clear it would be harder to see these scratches.

A couple reasons the army did go with it was reduced weight and air drag.

Not to mention polished metal isn't the best way to to keep a low profile over long distances.

And I am a bit of a WWII airplane nut.:tease:
