I am pretty skeptical about what I have heard but do any years of ranger have plastic or any non-metalic gears in the manual transmissions? I just want to know if this guy is full of it or not? I know that old joke "they'll make them rubber next year" Do I possible need to educate this guy?

Yeah they are all metal, there is no reason to put plastic gears in a transmission. maybe one of those wind up smart cars or somthing. But The only non metal part in a ranger that I can think of is the Nylon timing gear on the 2.8L which I believe you can get metal replacments.

the speedometer driven gear at the end of the speedo cable is plastic.

Other than that, no.

I know that in a lot of Mopar automatic transaxles (the minivans, mitsubishi galants/eclipses with the 6g72 or 4g, etc...) they will use hardened, metal-impregnated nylon plantaries. They run really really low apply pressure so they can :cough: get away with it. It turns out, that is is not a very good idea.

thanks i saw an add on cL for a ranger a guy wants to sell he said the motor is good but the trannys bad thinks he has plastic gears and that he sheared them off. I have a manual ranger myself but havent grinded any gears i guess i could have gone out and grinded them alittle to answer my own question....

Many of these transmissions would have been just as well off with plastic, but I assure you they are using metal gears.

This thread sucks.

And is about to get worse.

The guy is a moron, you have metal gears.

Chevy used plastic in some of their transmissions too. His Camaro SS has plastic parts in it haha

It's cool, I didn't take it personally. I got thicker skin than some.

It was an opportunity to have some fun :D

And yes, my thread about frosted flakes DOES suck :icon_rofl:
