when i was buildin my 5.0 i would start it up in my driveway and 10 mins later i would have a cop in my driveway tellin me the neighbors are complaining about the noise. lol my neighbors hated that truck and they couldnt wait till they saw that thing pull into the road so they could call the cops on me. i made sure she was all registered and legal before it even seen the street. sure enough the first day i drove away with it, the cops were waiting at the bottom of the hill and they pulled me over. they were pretty cool about it. all they wanted to know is if it was legal and safe. i popped the hood for them, revved it up a little. they said it was a pretty cool truck just dont drive crazy. we bullshitted for a few minutes and that was the end of it. the moral of the story is, the cops are just doing their job and if you respect them, they respect you. as far as my neighbors go, i would make sure i had it in 1st gear at about 3000rpms when i got close to the house.....haha
walking onto private property other than up your front walk to ring your doorbell without an invitation or a warrant is NOT legal.
IF they see you in the yard they are supposed to call to you
and ask something like "do you have a minute" or "can I speak to you"
before walking onto your property.
Most times people (and the police) who should know better
ignore the strict terms of the law...
As far as being on private property with the keys in?
There are restrictions on them there.
You can be completely blotto behind the wheel in your car,
IF you are on private property that is not normally accessable
to the general public.
Your own driveway, (unless the officer SEES you on a public road),
an industrial parking lot where YOU are entitled to be, but that also
"limits" public access... a small sign saying "Private property, No tresspassing"
is sufficient... they have NO right to enter.
they can briefly enter but if you tell them they are tresspassing
they've gotta go.
a small sign saying "private driveway" can legally protect you from
an obnoxious cop who wants to harass you for having an "open container"
"in" a motor vehicle... Who here has not worked on their truck with an open beer nearby?
To an officious asshole simply sitting on the drivers seat to change CD's
(with your legs outside the car) was an excuse for a cop to give a friend of mine a citation for "open container"... which he beat in court.
The vehicle was on private property.
It also wasn't going anywhere, no cylinder heads, but the judge dismissed the case before anyone could even tell him that...
Just don't do so with the vehicle parked at the curb.
Most cops are nice guys, but I've met my share of officers
who are genuine pricks that in another time would have
a bounty on their ass...
