My 2.3 Ranger is throwing code PO171, too lean on bank one.

What might be causing this?

Whats a mass airflow sensor and where is it at?

Dan

The mass air sensor is inside the air box, where you seperate it to get to the filter, has an elec connection there. As for the code it usually means you have a vac or intake air leak and you are running lean.Check all your vac hoses for cracks,loose.brittle.With the engine ideling, spray a little starter fluid(just a little) around vac connections and see if the idle changes. If so you've found a leak.Could possibly be your EVAP lines.Long shot is a bad gas cap.

Mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine, feeds info to the puter which adjusts the air fuel mixture.

The MAF sensor is in the tube going to the air box, not in the box itself. You will see the wiring connector.

A lean bank code can also be something as simple as a clogged fuel filter. It can also indicate a weak fuel pump. :) shady

Thank you all for the advice.

I will check these things out and let you know what I find.

Thanks

Dan
