Pulled the 8.8 out for its make over...but I have had a growing suspicion that the housing might be tweaked. I was trying to come up with ways to measure it....and then I remembered that we have a kick ass 3D scanner at work.

We scanned in and I the center point of four cross sections of the axle tubes (one just behind the backing plate on both sides, and one on both sides of the pumpkin. Then shot a line from the two end points. The middle is sagged down about 4mm on both sides, so if I project a line down one tube...its off by about 8mm from WMS to WMS

Any who..here are some cool pics.

Thinking that next time I pop a leaf or anything leaf related...I am going to go triangulated 4 link. I am on the hunt for a new 8.8 housing, this time I will be putting a legit truss on it that will serve as my upper link mount later. My last "truss" was just there for the traction bar mount and I think the axle may have been tweaked prior to adding it.

Silly Ranger...8 lugs are for real trucks...

Picked up a bunch of 2.5" perched for dirt cheap on Pirate

Pulled my 8.8 apart for the first time since I locked it...

Fluid looked new after 2 years of wheeling

The Lock Right is showing some age, but works just fine. I think I want to go selectable though with new setup.

Dutchmans are also showing signs of abuse...the driverside is twisted about a 1/4 spline or so. Both show wear on the splines where they engaged into the side gears? thinking maybe the tweaked housing is to blame.

I had to tighten the pinion nut once a few trips ago, noticed the seal was leaking and grabbed the flange it was sloppy. I knew I was regearing soon, so I just snugged it up....I found when I pulled it apart that the crush sleeve has wear on it? must have been spinning when it was loose.lol Regardless the new 8.8 will have solid shims and the pinion depth shims moved to the outer race instead of on the pinion.

So now I just need a housing and a maybe new locker so I can put things back together

My toyota rear shafts look the same. But i dont think my housings tweaked. Should put a paint line dow. The shaft to watch the twisting. I always mean to never do

Maybe Ill do the paint line trick on the new shafts. Since they are semi float, I may check them out more often.lol

for what its worth. when i used to drag race we would put shafts that twist back in, but when they weren't twisted when we tore the diff apart we wouldn't reuse them. the idea was that a shaft that didn't twist a little would snap.

In this application I am not really shock loading them, just a slow application of a LOT of torque. Not to worried really, these shafts are going into a much lighter B2 truggy with a lot less gearing and tire...They will out last the rig I am sure.

Picked up this little guy....8.8 pinion depth setting tool. Should make the setup on the two axles I have to do go much faster.

Unfortunately..they don't make a tool for the D44 HP app.

I also decided to ditch the OEM shims that go between the pinion bearing and the pinion head and went with the Dana style. With the shims between the outer race and housing they don't have the potential to split and extrude out under heavy load. I also don't have to have a pinion setup bearing do remove/add shims either.

I hoping to start setting gears soon. I was planning on doing the 8.8 first, but I am waiting on a housing now....So start poking 036speed to get moving on his Exploder so I can have his rear-end.....I mean axle...axle sounds better.

I have never heard of that tool. I want to see it work.

Got a 10.25 yet!?

Btw, not sure if this is an Explorer thing or V8, but this 8.8 has 2 OEM ladder bars and a 3rd shock from the top of the pumpkin to the frame rail.

The V8s got those factory traction bars. Every Mountaineer I have run across has had them.

The tool was like $30 bucks shipped and the company has awesome customer service. I ordered the 44 tool as well before I read the fine print.... Not for HP app. I called them and explained what I had done, expected the typical "Well we will cancel the order but charge 20% restock.... Blah blah" To my surprise it was a painless "No problem, we are sorry and will stop the charge before it ever leaves your account sir"
