Anybody know of an install kit that they know comes with much thinner shims?

I don't know if they come in much thinner shims, but you should get more of an assortment. Like I mentioned earlier, I used 2 shims that totaled .028". My thinnest of shims mic'd out to .007" or so. Spread out your shims and organize them into piles according to thickness. Stack shims together to get roughly .030". Go from there.

OR, find a local R&P shop and ask for some shims, they should only be a few bucks if even free. They normally give you a bazillion in each kit. They probably have stacks upon stacks.

But at any rate, I've been pleased at the assortment my Yukon kit gave me.

Okay so thanks to you guys, my pattern is looking...well, less ****ed up. I am at .008" backlash and I have a .030" pinion shim stack.

Here is the drive pattern

And here is the coast pattern (ignore the compound rubbed off at the heel, that was my finger's fault)

So what do you think guys, good enough to run? My only concern is that the pattern is a little close to the toe.

Would increasing the backlash move the pattern more towards the heel?

I'd maybe try .010" backlash on it, see what that looks like.
If your coast pattern doesn't smooth out a little (looks a bit heavy at the bottom), maybe also move the pinion out .002" or so (.002" thinner shim stack).

Having a pattern that's toward the toe is better than having it close to the heel though (under load, gear deflection tends to push the contact more toward the heel).

Just ordered an install kit and an 8.8 pinion oil slinger (mine didn't have one). I needed the install kit because I ruined 3-4 shims because I was too careless when putting in the carrier.
I know the Pinion oil slinger isn't entirely necessary, but for $3.00, it sure wouldn't hurt. I'll keep you guys updated as soon as this order comes in.

Here is what i'm getting with .028" Pinion Shim Stack and .010" Backlash. The drive looks great to me, but the coast pattern is still near the toe, but is also inconsistent. I am thinking this is because I am using my old bearing for mock-up. I personally think if I put on my new pinion bearing, the coast will be more consistent, and will more than likely have a pattern like the inner two teeth. Can anybody put some credibility to my theory?

This coast pattern sure is giving me a hard time.
