My truck (2002, 5 spd manual, B3000) engine's cam synchro failed on the highway running my engine dry for 1 minute - I'm fairly certain the engine is not worth my time repairing.. (At 160,000 miles) :icon_surprised:

Just made a deal on a parts truck - 2005 Auto Ford Ranger with another 3.0L engine.. 135,000 miles for $500. Will this engine be compatible with my truck?

Please anybody with experience let me know.. I love my truck and want to see him alive again.. Need to know asap :dunno:

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, long block swap for sure, long block is block and heads only

You would need pin diagrams for the large engine plug in from each year to see if they are the same.
But if you swap your lower and upper intake over to the '05 then it will be the same :)
Also all vacuum lines and other stuff will be the same.

Just a heads up
2004-2006 3.0l engines in Rangers and B3000 had a valve seat recession issue
Exhaust valve seats were miss sized on some and cylinder would lose some compression causing misfires
This was not a 100% failure across the board for all 3.0ls in those years, just a known issue that Ford did a TSB on
Recommended fix was head replacement................
So since your '02 heads would not have that issue(and lack of oil wouldn't hurt the heads) and the '05 "may have" that issue
I would swap over the '02 heads to the '05 block

Thanks for the quick reply! Sound re-assuring..

I wouldn't know where to find those diagrams so I'll take your suggestion and swap the intakes.

Also good to know the heads on my 02' will be ok to use on the 05, ' I'll have to do that as well. I was worried about some of the chatter of the 05/6 heads being faulty.. Glad my old heads will work!

I have the parts truck now, it's an 05 Auto and mines an 03 manual. Any tips for me in this swapping process? I've never done any engine or transmission pulling/work before!

put a pilot bearing in the 05 crank

label everything

Take lots of pictures of where the hoses and connectors you take off go.
