Here is my original thread

Here are the pics of what I found while looking at a Isuzu Rodeo I want to buy and am currently test driving for two weeks.

The 4 wheel drive seems to works just fine!! EDIT / THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE IS NOT WORKING!!! I CAN ONLY GET THE REAR WHEELS TO SPIN.

Did you run your fingers over those boots to check for breaks? If there are breaks in the boot you might need to start replacing parts before you get a chance to enjoy the ride...

Seems to be quite a bit of rust, but it's just surface rust...other than that...what are we looking at?

Yes it is surface rust.

These are pics of the right front and left front axles going into the hub. This is what makes it a 4x4.

Yes, I've actually owned a few of them...CV boots as they were called on my Tempo...they tend to break and allow grit inside...that's why I suggested the inspection...

Why does my gut tell me that axle is BROKE and that's why the 4x4 does not work and that's why I hear a clanking sound coming from that location when I go over a decent size bump and I can reach in there and grab the boot and move it up and down .:dunno:

Hmmmm...the clunk could be a number of things obviously...but if you can move that shaft then it may be broken like you suspect...and from what I've read recently on these vehicles the parts may be hard to come by or very expensive...

Any similar vehicles produced under another name that would allow parts swapping???

have checked to make sure it's still got the axle nut on the outside

How could the nut back off or even be gone?? Don't they have some type of key that locks them? kinda like our rangers have, you gotta use a magnet to remove the key!!

Well I just took the tire off and of course I don't have the right tool to remove the bolts to even begin to inspect the axle nut.:annoyed:

many parts on ebay and easy to come by, i think the cheapest axle i found for the front end was like 50 bucks shipped!!

Is the axle broke or is it a CV that needs replacement? Those look like they could be CV's and the noise your describing sounds like a worn/broken CV. You might only need a rebuild. Seems like you need more info about the vehicle.

Put it in 4wd and jack up the front end. Start turning tires and see what turns and what doesn't.

If the truck is in park, if you turn one front wheel the other front wheel should turn the other way. If something is busted only the wheel you are turning should turn, then follow the axleshafts to see what isn't connecting.

Depending on how it is set up the vehicle may have to be running or at least have the key on for the 4wd to work (vacuum hubs, electric CAD...)

My gut tells me the same thing.

Gota agree with Mr. Oaks here, I have a GMC 1500 Suburban and when 4x4 went, the front C/V on one side would move by hand up and down... (3 balls inside the boot, all three where gone).

Hint.... the other axle when the next winter, and the winter after that the front diff.

I would walk away... IMO

Hold on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOOK AT BOTTOM PIC, You can SEE the space between the C/V and the inside of the bearing support...

MISSING AXLE NUT, HANDS DOWN !
