Hi,

I was wondering what the approximate value is of a sawed off catalytic converter from Ford vehicles.

I am thinking about junking my Ford and wondered if I could saw off the converter and sell it seperately if I sell the vehicle to a scrap yard. I would not do this of course, if I was not junking the car.

if you can get it off a unsuspecting neighbors car in under 8 seconds it triples the value.

cop cars are times 10...20 if they were running at a donut shop.

remember safety first....chock the tires... wear fireproof gloves and goggles and use lipo battery sawzall....

seriously you will get more turning them in separate though...

They range in price from about $60 to $150 in Canada...not sure about the US...

There is also a small piece of platinum in microwave ovens...but you have to do quite a bit of disassembling to get it...and it only weighs about an ounce...but if you get enough of them...you can melt them down and make a ring for you favourite girl...lol

Current going rate is about $20-60 per unit. Some special ones might be worth a little more. Ford converters are generally not that valuable.

and be prepared to answer a few questions about how you obtained that converter, the yards are under pressure to stop taking stolen stuff.
Here in Toledo they wouldn't touch my 300 lbs of scrap aluminum copier parts until the police talked to my employer.

Perry

One of the yards I went to got busted for taking stolen items and they became very wary...had to give them my plate number and show them my DL...about a week later was when I got busted for no air pump...the local police and the MoE staked out the road where rthe scrapyards were and pulled over dozens of trucks hauling metal...

Good thing they didn't search for drugs...lol

Thanks for all the good info.

I was thinking about removing the converter from my old Ford Tarus before I scrap it (if I do), and was wondering if the scrap yard would be angry about this - do the scrap yards generally strip cars and or the converters (to resell the converters) before putting them through the masher?

No, they dont resell them to the public.

EPA considers it a violation of the policy to install a used converter from a salvage yard or sell it for reuse unless it has been properly tested and labeled. Similarly, it is a violation to install an untested used converter brought in by a customer, even if the customer insists that the used converter came off his/her vehicle.

Salvage or junk yards also would be considered liable for causing tampering if they sell converters that have not been tested or do not meet the requirements outlined in the policyand if the converters are subsequently installed by parties named in the Clean Air Act as prohibited from tampering.

its always worth it to scrap converters seperately, last car i scrapped i got $30 for the cat, where as it would have just been a few extra pounds on the car.

The junkyard by me lifts the car with a forklift. If it is missing parts like body, drivetrain or suspension (they check for cats when they get dropped off at night), you get light iron prices and not car prices unless they are very busy that day.
And the parts lady there hates me for asking how much this or that would be and not buying when I could get something new for 5-10 bucks more. Bitch. :annoyed: Not to mention a simple plug for something from there is $20 flat and only goes up from there.

I'll take a wild guess and say you're describing Albion?
Hate that place.

Sounds like that place sucks.
