SO the titles gives it away. I am looking into plastidiping my aluminum rims( the clear coat is peeling). I was wondering if anybody had done it and if so how did they come out(pics?).

It's easy. Just remember to clean off your rims and tape off the tires. You can do it with the wheels on the truck but it's way easier to take them off. Also take into consideration if you have crimp on wheel weights or stick on. If you get your tires rotated and balanced on a regular basis you'll have to peel them and respray each time they rebalance them unless you use the stick on weights. Also if you decide to do it be sure to check out Lowe's, Menard's, or any home improvement place you may have most of them carry Plastidip.

This is what happens if you don't tape off your tires.

I'm pretty sure I am going to paint mine flat black.

I've actually been looking into dipping the wheels on my Mustang, and possibly the hood. I came across these guys here that have some pretty sweet colors. Thought I'd share. They also do metallic, which is what I was actually searching for.

They have these put together bundles just for rims:

That said, my buddy just did his Lincoln and got the stuff (flat black) at Lowes. It turned out good.

How well does these stay on chrome wheels, and what prep work is needed? My rims need refinishing, but if I can hide it with a couple coats of plastidip, then that'll work to my advantage...

That's why I was also looking in plastidip.

It works the same no matter if it's a chrome or aluminum wheel. All the prep work that's needed so to make sure the surface you want to dip is clean. Like the OP my clear coat was coming off and now you can't even tell. I've got about 5 coats on my wheels and after about a year and a half and 15,000 miles the wheels still look great. My truck needs a bath, I'll try to clean her up and repost some pictures.

That's where I got mine from, couldn't be happier. It cost considerably less than the dipyourcar.com stuff and got the same results. Great deal if you only want to do flat black or gray.

There is a place in the Bay area that does this. I finally saw a few of the cars that were done and the wheels and other items. It is really neat. The area to be done must be completely cleaned and prepped or it is a waste of your time. I am thinking about doing the hood of my Ranger with a black out strip. The guy who does this says he will do it for my Ranger for $75. He did a Range Rover's hood in black and I saw that while I was there and it was very nice. Check out some of the work at Outlawed Customs in Clearwater, Fl

As I've been looking into this, as long as it is clean and prepped right, it is dang near impossible to mess it up. You just need to apply 4 or 5 coats so it is easier to remove.

Ok, but is the prep process the same for painting?

I had my ratty aluminum rims sand blasted and then I rattle can painted them blue...surprisingly, the finish is still as good as the day I did it...they did not chip at all and I just used the cheapest I could find.

I'd take pics but that would mean having to clean them...so maybe there are chips...as I haven't actually washed them for months...lol

Rick, you pretty much just clean your car really well and tape off small stuff that would be hard to peel any residual PlastiDip from. So you'll want to remove the bird bombs and anything else you wouldn't want in between paint and PlastiDip. Almost every video or how to I've seen sprays onto tail lights and head lights, then peels it off.

EDIT: Rick, here are a couple of videos you might like to check out.

This is about the best instructional video I've seen on the process. I personally like the spray gun method better than the rattle can method, which is why I think I'll use www.dipyourcar.com

This one shows the "color changing" pearl you can get. I really like this, and I'd love to do this on a Notch Fox. At the very end they go around it and show the change. It's sort of like the "Mystic Cobra" deal.

Rims, front bumper, grille, mirrors, side emblems, and rear bumper were all plasti-dipped about 2 years ago.
As far as prep work... I washed them then wiped the down with denatured alcohol (you can use anything that removes all traces of oil)... Let them dry and sprayed it.
