Do I even want to consider going back to a four banger? I really like v6 power would have a V8 in another economy But I get really frustrated looking for 4.0 v 5 speeds in two-wheel drive, ( they really aren't plentiful in this area), I'm almost embarrassed to say because I once had a 72 pinto wagon let's leave that at it was "cute" and say no more because it didn't have any power and it was in the smaller vehicle

If you can find an ecoboost 4 cylinder for a reasonable price, I'm sure you'll be happy with the power.

I know Honda makes a nice 4 cylinder, I'd never be able to afford anything new "er".
I have also noticed in my searching that there are many many rangers and explorers with the sohc being sold cheap

You know theres a middle ground between a pinto 2.3 and a ecoboost 2.3. The 2.3 duratec is just an ecoboost without a turbo. They are a dime a dozen They make good power stock and have ooodles of aftermarket high performance stuff available. And the duratec is made for the ranger (literally). Look what eslinger sells for them, tons and tons and tons of upgrades. They can make amazing power. They run a duratec in a formula car.

Yes I kind of lumped the 2.3 in there with the pinto engine it's not likely I would do anything other than use it there are a lot of those rangers around here,

I have an ‘02 w/ the duratec 2.3L. It’s by no means a powerhouse, but it’s much better then the old 2.3/2.5l.

A 72 Pinto would have been the European 2.0, the 2.3 was and till is far better. The 2.0 cams would fail and we had to pull the heads because-being German- the cam came out the back. The head gaskets would leak oil because the oil pressure relief valve in the pump stuck, we had to pull the head to replace the gasket, raise the engine up and drop the pan to replace the pump, then let it back down on the mounts and reinstall the heads. A freshly tuned 2.0 with an automatic and a/c would barely go up a hill unless you shut off the a/c. The other engine choice was the Kent 1.6 ohv, they made the 2.0 look like a hot rod and being English, they leaked oil. About the only 2wd Rangers you'll see in New England are 4 bangers, companies buy the for delivery vehicles, most everyone else buys a 4x4.

Isn't the old saying that English motors leak oil so the driver knows there's still oil in it.

another vote for the Duratec. AFIK they were only in reg cabs though.
with a manual they have a lower 1st gear than a 4.0, so plenty of power to get moving.
plus the years of the Duratec have the larger 11.25" front brakes.

I've been searching for a 4.0 5 speed 2 wheel drive in my area. There just aren't that many of them around here. There are lots and lots of 5-speed 4cylinder rangers, and maybe just as many discussions on how to get more power out of them! also in this area everything is Rusty, rotten, falling apart,

Thank you gentlemen! I'm finding a few 2.5, 5 speed rangers out there, was the 2.5 4-cylinder a limited-run? I haven't found a whole lot about. Doing an internet search 2.5 Ford 4 cylinder, only brings up Ford ranger which kind of surprised me, was wondering what other vehicles it's in. I'll keep looking in the meantime.
