Got a deal to help out a friend. Turns out it's not so good a deal.

I got a 9" chunk with 3.50 gears and a L/S. He wants 4.10s so I made a few calls and got a set of 4.10 gears for free. I was told the threads were a "little boogered" because the original owner had to leave the nut on and "tap" the pinion gear out. Thats' not a problem, I got a thread file or can easily take a new pinion nut and make a chaser out of it. When I picked up the gears they were in a box so I didn't bother to look at them. I got to tearing down the 3rd and removed the 3.50s and was ready to put the 4.10s in when I opened the box and........DAMN!!!!!!! It literally looks as if someone cross threaded the nut on and impacted it on and off 27 times. There are about 6 good threads left at the bottom but all the rest are F'd up big time. Now I know why they were free.

So my question is......can anything be done to fix the threads? I've tried to find a 3/4-20 die, no luck unless I pay $50 for a new one. Machine shop? That's another $50 at least. Cut 5/8 threads? What? Just looking for someone else's opinion as to how this can be fixed.

Thanx.
