can this be changed by the do it yourself guy? i pretty much do all my own work to my vehicle but this is one area iam a bit skeptical about. my front/rear pinion seals are leaking an so is my pops rear pinion seal. mine was weeping for a while then it just all of a sudden stoped. i think its probably low on fluid.i just swapped axles last summer an the seals were alright. replaced the bearings an axle shaft seals as well.. basically bought the axle an rebuild the hole thing. well one axle shaft seal is leaking as is the pinion seal. are any special tools required to change these? what should i look out for?

to do it right you have to pretty much take the whole thing apart due to having a crush sleeve on the pinion that need replaced whenever the pinion nut is removed

On my f-350 I took off the nut and placed a new seal and tighten the nut just a little more.... not much. It may or may not stop the leak but I think its worth saving the overhaul.

you can do it without replacing anything but the seal. count the number of turns it takes to remove the pinion nut and install it exactly the same number of turns. presto.

why is your new axle seal leaking? i'd take a very close look at the axle shaft and make sure it isnt worn/pitted.

You hit it right on. As long as you put the nut back exactly you won't change anything. Make sure to use thread locker.
