So if I took the nut off and pulled the pinion flange to replace the seal, do I have to set the preload agian? Or can I just put the nut back on and torque it down?

If you mark the nut and shaft before you take it off so that you can put it back in the same place it can be done. I've done a few successfully over the years but you have to be carefull and it really is a crapshoot.

you shouldn't have to mark it, it can't hurt, but not really necessary

from a couple recent posts it takes around 200ftlb of torque to crush the sleeve, and not near that much to lock the nut down securely... I've done it to my truck that way, but I don't care about my axle much, it's lived about a year so far though...

EDIT:
just realized what you meant by marking, that's a good idea and wouldn't hurt... use red loctite before putting the nut back on...

Yeah, marking it works good, but be sure you mark it clearly, as more than a degree or two off can be enough to create a problem.

Thanks for the replies, I will be sure to mark it and I will set my torque wrench at 180 ft lbs to see if it even takes that much to line up thr marks again.
