I'm stuck tearing down my 8.8" rear end. I can not loosen the bolts holding the flange to the pinion end of the drive shaft.

Is there a special tool to remove these bolts? See red arrows:

Thanks!

Yes, it's called a "1/2 inch impact gun". It's really good for lots of stuck things.

12mm 12 point wrench or socket and a breaker bar.

Thanks! I have an impact wrench but not the right socket. I bought a set of metric 12 points this morning (all I had were 6 points) and the bolts came right off with the 12mm 12pt socket.

Yeah, if you plan to do anything to this frequently I would look into a piece called a "Ford drive shaft socket". It's a 12 pt 12mm on a swivel. Very nice to have, especially with the impact gun.

Also, I had figured you already knew about the size of the socket needed and just couldn't get them to move. I've seen some bad ones.

First time I took the driveshaft out of my BII I was pushing on the bar so hard I turned the engine over. I had to get my wife to start the engine and sit on the brakes to hold the bugger still.
