USS Lexington. Corpus Christi Texas. Took that this evening. Tomorrow (Wed) I'll be heading towards Big Bend and then Marfa. Stopping at the King Ranch on my way.

Did you tour her?

I would like to tour her and Texas if I ever make it down that way.

No, I had spent the biggest part of the day in the Texas Hill Country and my goal was to get down to the Gulf of Mexico and see her in the water before it got dark. It closed before I got there so I couldn't go on board.

Here's an interesting tidbit. Admiral Nimitz is from Fredericksburg Texas, which is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. A beautiful area. The national Museum of the battle of the Pacific is located in Fredericksburg. You can go to Fredericksburg and learn about Admiral Nimitz as well as the battle of the Pacific and see displays, and then take a drive down to Corpus Christi and tour a World War II aircraft carrier that fought in the Pacific.

I expected the aircraft carrier to be a little bit bigger than what it was. Of course it looks bigger the closer you get to it. The Lexington is 220 ft shorter than the USS Nimitz.

Carriers are big, as far as ships go, but small as far as airports go.

Essex class carriers got small fast as the big cold war jets came out. Postwar they did a lot of experimentation on them with updates that really helped future carriers.

Towards the end they were more used as attack carriers with light aircraft and helicopters, kind of like modern amphibious assault ship's airwing (and the ships are about the same size)

A Nimitz class carrier is said to be able to survive 3x the damage a WWII Essex could.

Stay tuned, it was tractors all weekend :icon_thumby:

The decade display was really cool when it all came together. It was like herding cats to put together. Setup was at 3 so right off the top I was limited to retired people or full time farmers. Of those I had to wade thru the minefields of weddings, fishing trips, too far away, not cleaned up/not good enough and already committed to something else. Lots of guys are set up for doing hay, nobody wants to take their baler off and wash the tractor in the middle of hay season. The 4455 pulled thru at the last minute and they had to drop the disk mower off.
