I do not live in Illinois and cannot vouch for the validity of this, but thought I would pass it on.

Photo Radar in Illinois - begins July 1st!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PASSING THIS INFORMATION ONTO YOU SO YOU CAN AVOID A BIG SURPRISE. This is an old article, but still good info just in case you see the white van. (Your radar detector should pick up the "Ka" band from the vans radar gun.)

NOTICE:
ONE, ( 1 ) MILE OVER QUALIFIES FOR $375.00 MAIL TICKET. BE AWARE OF THIS IN ILLINOIS.

THESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY FOR YOUR MONEY, I AM CERTAIN YOU ALREADY KNOW.

Photo Radar in Illinois- begins July 1st!!!!

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING LEAD FOOTS !.....

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July.

One mile per hour over the speed limit and the machine will get you a nice$375.00 ticket in the mail.

Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways.

Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense.

The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension.

Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates.

This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement.

The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH.

Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. Pass this on to everyone you know who might be affected!!! http://www.snopes.com/politics/traffic/illinois.asp >; >> snopes.com: Illinois Freeway Work Zones Laws >> >> TRUE >>

i wish NC would do something like that. we need stiffer penalites here.

Things like this exist and have existed in various degrees/stages/manifestations throught the U.S. Like our intersection cameras here in California. If you're not breaking the law then you've nothing to worry about.....

I had one in Boulder last year, doing 45 in a 40mph work zone. Camera took my picture and all. It ended up costing me about $65 and no points. I almost went back the next week after the ticket showed up in the mail with a can of flat black epoxy paint....... Still want to go paint over the lense when I see one, that or take a tire iron to it.

The dang ones in Dever do it in Vans with people in it. They park on Medians, peoples front yards, sidewalks or wherever it pleases their sorry ass. I hate them with a passion. Almost as bad as all the red light cameras we have now.

Could be worse...

just think of how much tickets would cost to pay for all that fuel lol

In Illinois now, its about $100 and no points for anything over 5 mph, as far as excessive speed I'm sure the penalty goes up and points will be issued. In my opinion, they help out mostly when it is not rush hour traffic. Otherwise, people tend to slow way down in the areas of photo radar and that makes traffic bind up in those areas. I personally think that more accidents are probably caused by them than they prevent (I am referring only to rush hour traffic times). I don't have any statistics or proof to confirm or deny my thinking, except for what I see when I drive in Illinois.

Darn, just 1 mph over the speed limit? Man...that bites!!! I have been pulled over for 8 mph over on the highway before on I75 and I4 but the trooper said to be safe and don't speed. I know several people who got tickets for 12 mph over on I75 and I4. So, I wonder if the troopers just watch to see who is changing lanes too frequent or something? 5 over not so bad, but 20 mph over and you are asking for trouble. If it's 75, I do that. No need to drive 80 mph. If it's 60 I do 65 but as long as it is safe and not bumper to bumper and not in a crowd!! I love to stay in the middle lane all the way on the interstate going anywhere.

Around town I do the speed limit!!!

There was a court ruling in california that unless the ticket (summons) is issued directly by a police agency then you don't have to respond or pay. Contractors for police agencys don't count. In California a summons cannot be issued by a non-government agency.

Apparently there's about 35% of the folks that will pay. That's not enough to break even so some cities are removing them.

As far as I know, IL doesn't use a point system.

You are correct. Momentary lapse of judgement I guess, I live in Missouri (which has "points") but I drive through Illinois frequently. Illinois does have reciprocity with Missouri... meaning that depending on the offense, Illinois will notify Missouri of the offense and Missouri will then give you points on your license.

A couple of real good points were mentioned in this thread 1. they use K or Ka band NOT lasar or lidar so we can detect them and when revenue decreases past a certain point the cameras go away! i'm shocked ! the way one group up here fought them was pretty smart ,they got all the big camera boosters to go on record saying "oh this is safety not money" then found a loophole in the RCW (revised code washington) saying plainly that camera fines should be like parking tickets so now in those cities that went to $45 from $108 the cameras are leaving-so much for SAFETY ,HUH? I AM FOR NO SEATBELTS,HELMETS,CAMERAS OR SPEEDLIMITS- NONE OF WHICH AFFECT ME ON THE TRAIL!

We have had a big issue in our county about the red light cameras. There are only a few red light cameras in our county and they have been there for 2 years now as a test to see if they actually reduced accidents at those intersections. This was the result according to MoDot:

"Through November, cameras within the county issued 32,909 citations worth $3,109,900, with the ATS cut worth $1,031,039. In the city of Arnold, accidents nearly quadrupled at the photo enforced intersection of Richardson Road and Vogel Road. The best performance of any camera was seen at Rockport Elementary along Jeffco Boulevard where collisions declined from nine to eight. The county council will now hold a series of open meetings on repealing the ordinance that authorized the use of red light cameras."

That is a 370% increase in accidents because of the cameras at the first 2 intersections.
