just wondering what would you do or like to see done to increase performance and horse power.. oh and no cheating by swapping to a 5.0l :D

i was thinking of a hood scoop and supercharger:D:icon_hornsup::headbang::yahoo::icon_surprised:

First off I'd like to see this posted in the right section...

Second, are we talking bolt-ons or internals here?

Only real bolt-on power adder is forced induction, and it has been done more than once you just got to look in the right section. Electric Fan can make a big difference, but it's not really a power adder, it just frees up power used by the engine driven fan. A tuner can help, but it really makes more difference when complimenting other mods. All other bolt-ons are really just to support other mods like internals or forced induction.

With internals there are a lot of possibilities. If staying naturally aspirated a big gain can be had from a compression increase, heads and pistons can get you up to 10 or 11:1 compression where 9:1 is stock. With proper tuning this can give a big bump in economy and power, but requires premium gas. Porting and polishing can give nice gains. An aftermarket cam can make more power, and put the power band right where you need it. All of these require a well though out build plan. If not done right the engine may make more power, but that power may be in a completely useless RPM range compared to what you need.

Sometimes the best performance mod you can do isn't even at the engine, but at the opposite end of the truck. Proper gearing can make as much difference as any power adder you do on the front.

BTW a hood scoop ain't going to do shit, unless you need it for engine clearance. Back in the days of carburetors when your air filter sat right on top of the engine it could make a difference by getting more cool fresh air and a ram air effect, but with EFI that is gone. As long as your engine fits under the hood a scoop is really for looks only. If you want it for looks that's cool, but please don't get one of those stick on hood scoops and think it looks cool.

this is in the right section as i meant it for discussion only

bolt on or internal doesn't matter as long as specifically for the 4.0l

and a hood scoop does do 1 thing it makes it look faster :D

specifically for the 4.0l

"Discussion only" or not, it is in the wrong section because it is "specifically for the 4.0l." There is a forum down below that is specifically for discussions on the 4.0l.

You started a thread about performance mods and then you say that. :lame:

get off your soap box and get a sense of humor

Like JoshT stated there are a number of things you can do, but if your after serious gains be prepared to roll out some dough very little can be done with a poor mans wallet, also make sure you upgrade you engine as a system, not just one part, for ex: a CAI is just going to help air flow...that's it, you've only upgraded the air element, if you don't do something for the fuel element like injectors them your GM will down the drain along with any actual gain, like Josh said, most mods are meant to support eachother, gotta do them together to get results

Josh does have a sense of humor. I've been guilty of going overboard on these kinds of questions but I know his thoughts. He just doesn't like a forum cluttered with repeated threads.

How did you miss this in the Tech Articles section?

How did you not do an Advanced Search, select the 4.0 Liter Forum, and type "performance"?

I'd be seriously surprised if you asked this question after reading that tech article. It's pretty dang comprehensive.

Let us know if you have any specific questions! :icon_thumby:

actually did not search because this to does not have anything to do with any current projects, and i was just curious to see what people have seen or would like to see for the 4.0l.. that's it just was looking for a friendly discussion that would possibly go into it doesn't exist but would like to see it.. thats why i did not search and why i posted it where i did. if the admin or mods wanted it moved then so be it... it was not up to josh to speak his mind on weather not it should have been posted somewhere else. it is however the mods \ admins place to do so if they choose.. josh did come across as an ass IMO but i have moved on and as far as im concerned its over...

Josh sorry if i have offended you. it was not my intention to offend anyone.

so now can we put this discussion back on the right track?

i would like to see a NOS setup for the 4.0 l if it exists (limited time so did not search the web):D

yes i agree that each enhancement are meant to support each other.. how would you do your 4.0 if hypothetically building it as your dream engine?

I'm sorry, but I disagree with that. It is the admin and mod's job to keep this place in order. Fix things where they need to be fix, and resolve or remove altercations (or the offending party) when they need it. All of these guys have lives and jobs outside TRS, that even includes Mr. Oaks. When they get on here to do their duties, there are better and more important things that they can be doing than moving threads like this one to the right location.

We should be policing ourselves, and they only step in when it's absolutely needed. To that end a little peer pressure can get the job done a lot nicer and neater than if they have to bring out the ban hammer, or start being forum nazis. Believe me a web forum runs best when the administrators and moderators have almost nothing to do.

Hey, you are entirely right. I can be a complete ass. I haven't yet gone that far in this thread. As for being offended, ain't gonna happen buddy. Just been busy so haven't gotten back around to this thread yet.

Ya done did it again. You want to get this thread back on topic, but then you go talking about mods to blow up your motor.
:temper::pissedoff:

^^^ In case you couldn't tell that was supposed to be sarcasm and humor. :thefinger:

Now back on topic...

When it comes to engines, I'm not sure if I am capable of having a dream that low. I'll sleep on it tonight and see what happens.

thanx for the reply and just so you know everyone is entitled to their opinion...

HE does have a sense of humor after all (sarcasm)

NOS would just be fun on a track of the straight variety:D:D

Port polish and blue printed would be a good route, then I'd upgrade things to assist the engine such as exhaust, gearing in the axle(s), injectors, small stuff to start with, then if I had the money I'd get it tuned or I'd put a super charger on it,

Or there's an engine swap which will give you MUCH bigger results, it can be tedious but I don't know of a single person yet that regrets it.
