Hi I'm getting frustrated with my truck. Here is a look for what i have been through. Stupid me bought a 2007 Ranger 4.0 sohc v6. I knew it needed a timing chain and a valve cover. So I decided to rebuild the engine since it was out because of the timing chain. So now i put the timing chain on, put the engine back in go to starter her up. No go. I ended up having to replace the PCM computer in the truck. I am trying to program the keys to start the truck. I done up to where you turn the key to the off, count to 15 second turn off and on 3 seconds up to 5 times and from there I am lost. I need help and i am running out of time have had no vehicle since February. I am ready to pull my hair out.

You probably need a mobile locksmith to program the keys to the new PCM if you're positive it's a strictly PATS issue. I had to do it when I lost my keys. Should be less than $100 + a bit more more for the 2nd key

Yeah, you need either Forscan with the extended license or get a locksmith or dealer to program. Assuming it is a PATS issue. There’s lots of potential reasons for a no-start. There is no on-board stuff other than adding extra keys beyond the two that the truck comes with (if you have two non-cloned keys that are logged in the PATS system, you can use on-board programming to add extra keys until he system is full of keys which I want to say is something like 6 or 8 keys total) and the other on-board is programming key fobs if you have power locks. There is no on-board access to reprogram PATS, you need a laptop with a cable and the software to get into it.

There also is no simple way to bypass PATS and we would not discuss such a thing on open forums either even if there was because that opens the door to theft and we just aren’t going there.

What have you done to verify it’s a PATS issue? Beyond the fact that you changed the PCM which may or may not have been the issue. Have you checked fuses and relays? Made sure everything is hooked up correctly? Fully charged battery?

I took it to ford and they said i needed a new computer. It was not talking to the OBD II sensor what so ever. I have a laptop with the forscan obd port. I checked fuses and relays. So how can you tell if you have a clone key.

With your 2007 the PATS module is in the instrument cluster and is non serviceable, so that is what the keys need to match.

Your problem is that the instrument cluster sends a coded signal to the PCM, That's where your problem is.

The instrument cluster and PCM are a matched set, It's my understanding that only Ford can match them together.
That was done to stop people from putting low mileage clusters into a high mileage truck.

So the PCM needs to be paired with the instrument cluster. Is there anyway to verify this pair is actually married?

I would think Forscan with the extended license should be able to marry things back up, but I’ve never worked on one where the cluster was part of the PATS system yet. When I did my engine swap I just swapped the PCM. When I plugged Forscan in and put the key in to the run position the first time it brought up the conflict and asked if I replaced something and what. I clicked PCM and it did it‘s magic and paired it all up.

I’m not sure if Forscan can tell if a key is cloned or not. But it can tell you how many keys are programmed in

Thank you guys for all your help. I bit the bullet and paid for a lock smith you come out and they where done in 5 minutes. Sading but I had ran out of time with part of the project. But I will have other questions to come soon I'm sure
