PATS Question

Well, I went and looked at my possible donor truck today (01 Sport Trac w/ 4.0) and everything looks fine with the exception of one thing. The seller didn't mention to me that it is a theft recovery vehicle. The ignition system is busted all to hell.

What is all involved in the PATS system? Is the ignition tied to the PATS computer that is also tied to the ECU for that particular vehicle?

From what I under stand, reading from this website, is that there is a box behind the dash by the heater box that is part of the PATS system.

I guess what I am asking is that can I just buy a ignition, key, and pats box from one vehicle without buying the ecu from the same vehicle?

Thanks in advance.

It will need to be programmed, but it will work. I have to wonder what else the seller didn't mention.

I don't know.. Since he conveniently forgot to mention that it was stolen, I'll make sure to run the vin through a couple friends of mine.
I do know this guy has a auto repair shop so I am assuming he buys and sells like the rest of us. 1 thousand bucks for a wrecked 01 Sport Trac is a damn good deal..now if he was selling it for 500 or so, I would have showed up with the police.

Everything else seemed to be fine, engine block, drive train, etc.. I will find out within a week or so.

ignition is torn out or what? that truck has a tranceiver around the outside off hte ignition switch/bolt. The lock cyle is cake along with the steering column portion of cast alum. If the wires are cut to the transponder you'll have to soldier the harness back together or replace it with anothher one. If the harness is cut further down from the tranceiver then you'll need to look further. if the guy has the original pats keys you may be able to hold/tape them against the tranceiver and then turn the ignition with a screw driver. post up a couple of pics im real familier with the pats on these trucks

Yeah, the ignition is busted out. I didn't see any signs of cut harness wires, even if there is, I am handy with a soldering iron and have plenty of heat shrink tubing to last me a few years.

I don't have the vehicle yet, I am waiting on my bonus check first.. Hopefully I will get it this week.

I think I am more excited to have keyless entry, electric windows and locks more than having a 4.0!

well get up some pics i can get you through the nonsense. the thing you cant do tho is program the keys so hopefully he has both ignition keys still since they stole it without keys. Then you just encode a new ignitin cyle and crank it. the keys codes are stored in the pcm or IC. so you'll be good:icon_cheers:

I would just get a x3 and get the PATS turned off.

why does everyone want to deal with pats anyway? i say shit can it. program it out and make a kill switch/bypass somewhere else.
