Passenger window

I've had my b2 for about a year now and the passenger window never would roll down(power windows). But as summer came it got to hot without a/c so I decided to change the motor but before I was about to buy a new one I thought I would test it. So I hooked it up to the battery and the gears worked. When I put it in the window will go up but not down. What should I do to find the problem?

Start tracing down wires, add power to it somewhere see If it works. I found out the contact points of my switch were wore down

Be careful jumpering power to wires.

Power window wires (like door lock wires) are grounded (they "rest at ground") except when a switch is moved. Jumpering power into one of these grounded circuits usually burns up the contacts in the switch.

The right way to test a motor is to unplug the switch, and jumper power and ground to the two wires going to the motor. That gives one movement in one direction of the motor; reverse the power and ground jumpers to get movement in the other direction.

The right way to test the switch, is to leave it plugged in, and put an old-school test light across the two motor wires; the light should light when the switch is pressed in either direction.

It's well worth it to make up your testing jumpers with an inline fuse holder; a blown fuse is cheaper to replace than a burnt switch.

Anyway, chrwilkins30, it sounds like your problem is probably bad switches, or a break in the wires between the switches and motors. Good luck with the troubleshooting and repair.

sorry, i should have added that. but i have a wire set up to jump power that is fused... we use it on semi's all the time tracing down problems.

but on most b2's i've seen, its always the points in the switch.. if the motor is good, like yours is. sometimes the wires will halfway break where they enter the door jam.

A good rule of thumb when dealing with Ford stuff, especially from the 80's is to remember that all the power window switches are garbage.

go to rockauto and just get a new switch. They aren't that expensive.
