passenger storage compartment locks..

Hi there it seems like the B2's have generally 3 small storage compartments in the passenger area walls. Evidently these small compartments "lock" using the door key. If you have a console, it seems to use the same key to lock as well. My question is "how to remove the lock cylinder" which will allow these to be switched, traded, or in my case changing the paint trim color w/o the lock installed. I've searched and can't seem to find the answer here...It has to be simple...and i have a personal quest to get up to speed with this today...

It seems that at least in the first Gen b2's, they share the door key on all of these small locks...something that would be good to know when buying a new "used" piece of trim....

thanks for any help here...btw...don't throw any of these away, they may have a little value..along with your matching door keys...and locks..

On Edit:...I realize that many if not most on this forum actually use this B2 platform to "4 wheel like no 2marroOh" and I get that..I enjoy an outing as much as any off road..in fact i sold an new "08" Jeep JK " to drive one of these till i can't anymore so i get it..I DO have another one that i am modding..but I also like the idea of a restored complete example of what this vehicle was off the showroom floor..(with a few improvements)..so bear with me all...

I never noticed that they locked before. Darn shame I changed out my plastics and tossed all the old panels Well,
now I'll have to pull one of the locks to have a key cut for it. I took a quick look at mine and it doesn't seem like removing/changing the locks would be all that difficult, Might try that this weekend. Looks like youtake the 2 screws out of the backplate/cover panel and then a lock spring kinda like the rear hatch lock, or the doors, use.

Thaks for postin a reply man...I began to think i was the only one who had ever looked at these.

I've worked with the lock some ..but haven't found the magic combination..maybe we can figure it out.

A friend of mine needed to repaint his compartments and caused the interest...i then realized mine had a key cylinder..Probably something simple but i don't have any locksmith friends..so short of taking to a "specialist"..i guess i've made it a project to learn about this myself...


I miss some of our friends in Wasila...How's the summer rain this year?..not too bad i hope...

unlocked, only turns clockwise w/ a key in it

locked, put the key in and turn it counter clockwise

I didn't know for sure that they did this, but I did know the glove box locked like this and just kinda figured the side compartments would too.

Far as I know these are not keyed lock cylinders as the glove box in my ranger will work with either the door or the ignition key. You just need a key that fits down in there.

My Olds was the same way. Except that you could only pop the glove box latch with the key. It was the way it was designed.

In my case on my 88 xlt , MY door key (not ignition) fits my xlt but not my Newly acquired 88 Eddie so it would seem the keys are specific.. and of course the 88 Eddie keys do NOT work on my xlt locks...and my 88 Ranger door keys don't work either... at this point it seems they may be key specific...I'm glad ur invlolved in this conversation..i really am curious how to get that lock tumbler out of there if this is the case so i can swap these around or paint the doors etc...

everyone seems to talk about swapping consoles etc...and if they were 1st gen the locks would have to be switched if they were used..but i couldn't find any info in various searches so i started the thread...

maybe it's partly becasue there has been a surplus of plastic parts to choose from if someone wants an "original"..set of plastic..but in my area these bodies seem to be getting harder to find in good shape anymore...

I've always used a small pair of scissors to turn the one in the van. Ha.

I'll have to remember this, I'm switching the plastics on my Ranger and luckily I still have the old pieces, and the key to the new ones.

Hmm, mine only has little metal nubs, not the plastic pieces, and i am pretty sure mine dont lock.

Well,
I checked both my BIIs and seems the door key is needed. Unfortunatly I have swapped out the busted up plastics on both and now neither keys work on them but the glove box I never noticed as lockable either. Neat that I can now lock it on my 87 that has the orginal. Not sure what falue that actually has but it's cool none the less. One thing about Alaska is the locksmiths are okay on prices.

Yeah the rain has been coming on strong and getting in my way. Really makes the grass grow!
