Hi guys,

My son has a 1994 Ranger XL with a 3.0L manual and we are working on it for his first car. I found a 2001 XL 4.0 L manual that could be used for donor parts and wondering whether the dashboard would fit. Also whether The 4.0l engine and tranny could be swapped (or what major issues there would be attempting it in terms of compatibility) any help is appreciated- thx

Not much of anything will swap between a 94 and 2001. The obd1 and obd2 systems are wired completely differently so the dash is a no-go and they are physically different in shape. The engine and trans can physically be swapped, but there is a huge amount of wiring work required to make them work, so its not at all practical.

Thats a big help! I think I’ll just cherry pick a few parts and move on! Thanks

If you grab the dash, engine and transmission it should all go in, would have to be done as a group pretty much as a bunch of wiring will have to be swapped over but everything should fit. The engine, dash and transmission are all different between the 3.0L and 4.0L, the transmissions are technically the same model (M5OD-R1) but the integral bellhousing is different between the 3.0L and 4.0L, and some gear ratios are different between the two but that isn't an issue....

There'd be other complications swapping that 4.0L in as it has a returnless fuel system and some other weird stuff here and there, but with both trucks it should all be doable depending on your comfort level in things.
