Just got a 1988 ranger 4x4 swapped in new hubs today and figured ide look at the parking brake with my buddy cuz it doesn't engage not a big concern i use the trans right now but it would be nice to have fixed. We believe that the hardware kit was installed wrong any pictures or diagrams would be helpful thank you kindly :icon_cheers:

What hardware kit did you use? Pictures for us might help as well. Did the brake work before? Is the cable stretched?

I didnt install the hardware kit previous owner rolfed it up and idk like i said just got it like a week ago
and the cable isfine everything moves when i press the e brake pedal in just wont engage apologize for no pictures dont hav a camera handy

Mine used to seize up on me...ended up replacing the shoes, drums, and the cables...works fine now...check the cables for breaks and rust...they tend to seize up after the rear connection...

It sounds like its out of adjustment somehow. Definitely need to see if those pads are engaging in the rear. Follow the cable back. If you have a buddy you should be able to check it out. Agree with Mark_88, get those drums off and inspect. Always a good idea to check that on a newly purchased vehicle anyways ;)

well its raining likeholy murder now so probably just gona leav it off till later got a chilton though so ill have it sorted out in the near future might do what Mark_88 did and just make it all new thank yall

If you have to replace the drums, find a set of the Aerostar ribbed drums...I think they were the 10" size on my truck...if you have 9" not sure if they are available...but they became standard equipment on later Rangers...at least I think they were because all the ones I see in the junkyard have them...supposed to dissipate heat better...

I'm really not sure what you are getting at there Mark.

88 should have the 9" drums, which should have ribs anyway.

Mine didn't have them and they were not sold as an option for the 88 Ranger in Canada...maybe they are now...

Maybe they were stock in the US...but I've not seen them on anything older than the 93s (in the junkyard)...that I can recall...

Both my Rangers had the 10" brakes though...
