parking brake

i got a 86 ranger and when i push the parking brake all the way down it only locks one rear brake is it suppose to lock both rear brakes?

yes, it is supposed to lock them both. when you have a chance to do so, have a helper depress the parking brake while you look at the cables (specifically where the cable from the pedal connects to the cables that go to the rear) and see if both rear cables pull out from their housings or if its only one side. if only one side is working i would take apart the offending drum and clean up and lubricate the pivot point for the parking brake arm (it attaches to the rear shoe i believe) and see if you can slide the cable in its housing while you have it apart. make sure that your speader bar isnt bent or disfigured (the metal rod that goes under the wheel cylinder and between both shoes) and that the shoes are adjusted properly once the drum is reinstalled.

i know mine were bent in half. the little plate that the wire pulls to lock brake.

you know underneath the truck where the cable travels to the back and theres a adjusting screw right there it only adjust one brake.and it works on both wheels it will hold one but just make one hard to turn and not complety hold it.

yeah its not a great design being that it only pulls the primary cable and relies on the secondary cable to be free moving inorder to work properly.
