Been having an intermittent rough idle since I bought this truck. It’s a 2000 3.0 4x4 FF truck. Before I checked any codes I had replaced the injectors, spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, and resealed the upper intake with a new gasket.

The truck oscillates when idling rough. And smokes from the tailpipe. It is usually more prominent upon startup. Once it’s warm it tends to run a bit smoother but the exhaust still smokes a bit. Exhaust smells like it’s a bit rich.

After I replaced parts, I decided to take it and get codes pulled (no CEL on the dash, but still had codes stored).

The codes that were pulled were:

P0176 Flexible Fuel Sensor Circuit
P1131 & P1151 Sensors Indicate lean.

from my understanding P1131 & P1151 are both upstream sensors reading lean. P0176 is something to do with the Flex Fuel Sensor Circuit. Either a short in the wiring or possibly bad gas.

I cleaned the connections on both ends of the sensor and still the same. Today I dropped the tank, emptied it, and cleaned it out. I’m going to bolt it back in and refill it with new fuel.

What are the odds that the ECM or the FF sensor itself are the problem? I ruled out any vacuum leaks because I replaced all the lines that seemed to be wearing out. I warmed the truck up and unplugged the IAC valve and the truck shut off.

Thanks for any help.

fuel filter ?

Flex fuel sensors do fail. That's far more likely than a PCM issue. Unless you find one in a JY, the flex fuel sensor isn't cheap enough to just throw on the truck on a whim, so make sure it's bad before you buy another. Even taking it to a dealer for a $100 diagnostic to confirm it's bad would be money well spent compared to spending $750+ on a new flex fuel sensor only to find out it's not the problem.

Yea I’ve read they’re $500+, so I’m hoping it’s not the sensor.
