Hey,
I havn't posted in some time but when I did you guys were great. I have a 90 Ranger 2.9L with a fully reman'd engine about 40,000 on it.

On my way home from work a couple nights ago I started to hear a slight tick, like sticking lifter kind of tick, was sporadic.

the next morning I started it to go to work and it was a constant loud tick, much louder then injector tick but not as loud as a knock (as far as I can tell), I had just had the oil changed (Shop unfortunately not myself so they would have used basic oil etc.) about 100-200km ago, I checked the oil and it is quite dirty, granted when I do it myself I used Mobil 1 synthetic so it was clean looking pretty much the entire time.

my intention is to redo the oil change with the higher quality stuff but i'm wondering if I can get some input and ideas on what it could be or what I should do with it.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the lube folks put oil in there that has more cleaning agents than you have been accustomed to using. So it did it's job an cleaned the crap out of the engine. Now the oil is dirty from the cleaning and possibly some dirt it lodged in one f the lifters. With a bit of luck and new oil the lifter might go back to work.

SO... I found a few things, the filter felt like The Hulk screwed it on, the seal was bone dry and when pouring the oil back into my new bottles for recylcing there was more then the 4.7l capacity, in fact more then the 5L the bottles could hold... they reused my gasket/crush washer rather then put a new one on, pretty sure i'm not going with the effort savor (Shop) again ha!

POSITIVE, start her up after the change same loud tick for 20 seconds or so then as if a light switch was flicked, silence! start her up for work the next day and we are still golden.

And this is why I will not let anyone work on my cars...

Just for reference I think I would drop by that shop and find out what they put in there. I'm sure it was some bulk stuff out of a drum.

As for the extra oil, the guys set a knob on the dispenser and pumps until it stops. Bad knob, dumb guy???? A little extra oil won't hurt anything as long as the crank doesn't hit it and foam it up.
