I've used a High Lift jack as a winch once. It was a lot of work but got the job done. Granted, it was a Ranger and I was trying to get into a garage (the engine was blown) but it got it done. I think the come along I have is rated for 8,000#. It might be more work than the High Lift jack was to do the same job. Probably safer though.

The manual “boat” winch I posted would work a lot better than a come along or high lifter.

I've never done it. I have now seen it done and confirmed that it's as much work as my imagination told me it would be.

This is a cool group of people. Somebody just handed me a white Russian. We're having discussions that are normally considered politically incorrect. And we all love 4-wheelin and camping.

I never said they were cooler than Ranger lovers. But, aside from their Jeep or Toyota fetishes, they're kindred souls. The Land Rover team is really cool.

Last post for tonight.

The last team to do the blind driver course fielded a team where the co-driver, who became driver, was a 16 year old girl. Her dad, the normal driver, became the co-driver/navigator. 90's model Cherokee, no doors, built, not bought. Good rig. Dad was impatient, high strung and yelled at her if she didn't do as told immediately. Steady rain. Course was all chewed up, slimy red mud and had been re-routed twice to make it remotely possible. That girl drove better than many of the seasoned veterans. Kudos to her.

It was clearly stressfull. But she looks like a tough survivor and I'm sure she loves her Daddy. For the most part that team was pretty great from what I saw.

Apparently, my tent is old and developing some issues. Got a bit of water in there yesterday. The end of my duffel bag that got wet was the end with clean dry socks and underwear. Sleeping bag was dry, though. Got a good sleep in.

A come along is a giant pita to use as a winch, but also weighs 1/3 of a high lift jack. It’s mostly just a pain to release the tension and re hook the straps. I feel like a high lift would be better in that regard.

I bet I could burn up a clutch on the balance beams. Getting on seemed like the hard part for most of them because they got there with wet muddy tires and would slip off the beams. Once you started the challenge, you were not allowed to back up.

Conversely, a High Lift can come up and bite you if you aren’t careful and you have that heavy jack suspended up in the air just waiting to fall and crush something if a strap breaks. 6 of one, half dozen the other I guess.
