Overhead console sensor identification

Can anyone identify by part number this sensor? This is supposed to be an Ambient Air Temperature Sensor for the Explorer overhead console. All the searching I have done has turned up very different looking sensors and they are not working correctly with the console.

Have you tried unplugging it and looked inside? That looks like the plug protector for a vehicle not equipped with the ambient temp display.

The sensor was installed when I installed the console, and worked fine. Last week it started to lock up and not move, and then was off in its temperature readings. The sensor/connector is (2) pcs, the front bullet assembly the sensor, and the connector. Wiring is BL/WH & BL/YL . I have checked the ohms on the sensor, but don't really know what the readings are supposed to be. But I do know that with cold and heat the resistance does flucuate.

Did you wire up the speed control when you put the console in. I've heard that not doing this would cause lock ups and faulty readings. I just recently installed an Explorer OHC in my 2000 Ranger. Love it.

Yes the OSS on 2001 was hooked up, 3.0, M5ODR1, with ESOF, uses a 1LD54 trans ID which utilizes an OSS output for sensor speed. Connected to the GY/BK wire to the GEM. The sensor worked initially when the console was installed, you never really know how old the sensors are especially when you purchase the console and sensor on E-Bay. It just seemed to start acting up over time, I figured it was the sensor being worn out. The issue is the original sensor, versus what I have been able to find through research. None of the sensors I have found look like the original sensor, don't have any resistance spec's so I can't tell if its in range out out of range.

How about your ground wire. I've seen where one fellow used the bracket mounting screw for his ground source. I ran the wire to a good ground source under the dash. ads08 may just be correct that your board is going out. I understand they are fragile and have been known to give trouble. You can research that as I've seen a site that I believe shows how to test and repair it.

OK, I thought I would provide some information on my original post as I have discovered the gremlin. I started the morning at my local Ford parts department. I tried to identify the sensor, no luck, what year, whats the application, its really old...... So off to the junk yard, I found a 96 explorer, with an OHC and the sensor, 5 minutes later and $40.00 lighter, I headed home. It appears that the sensor I have is a early design, 96,97,98 maybe, definently changes after 98'. The sensor was located DS behind the valance at the bottom of the core support. Got home and installed the new sensor with the existing console in the truck, still 22* & Ice. Then pulled the existing OHC, and installed the one I just pulled from the 96' this morning, 82* & NO ICE. It appears that the board either just got tired or one of the resistors is bad. Swapped out the center section from the 96' was gray and installed it into the tan trimmed console. We are now back in business, there is definately a difference in resistance readings from the newer model explorers (ambient air temp sensor) and the early models. The boards are probably calibrated to the resistance of the sensors. I know that the new designed sensors have a completely different impeadence at the same temperature than the early style sensors. Hope this helps someone who has or will run across a similar problem.
