i have a 88 ranger stx and just put in a tranny. it shifts fine but does not seem to go into od. it came out of a 88 bronco II does anyone have any idias?

how many times does it shift?

A4 wasn't electronic yet in 88, so if there's a problem, it's not wiring.

It shifts 3 times. It tacs obout 3000 rpms at 55 mph

1st 2nd 3rd dosnt even try to go into od and there is no sliping.

if it shifts THREE times that's:

First gear>> SHIFT (1) >> Second Gear >> Shift (2) >> Third Gear >> Shift (3) >> 4th Gear....

a four speed automatic can only SHIFT three times....

Are you SURE you are counting correctly?

well maybe its just the gearing.it does shift 3 times ive heard some of the older rangers had a low gearing its a lot differnt than my 92

Well i solved the problem the speedo is off by 10 mph so at 55 its really 65 makes good sence why it tacs at 3000 rpm . So next qeustion how do you calibrate the speedo?

well in the older rangers we have gears, so you have to swap the speedo gear. Not sure on the specifics though...
