Overdrive doesn't work

1989 2.9 a4ld 4x4, What would cause the overdrive not to work.Trans rebuilt 4 years ago not mistreated.thanks

Multitude of possible sources. Could be solenoids, worn clutch packs, broken bands, etc... Is OD the only gear that doesn't work? How are other shift points? Soft, abrupt, slipping? How does the fluid look? There are many great resources in the Tech Forum for the A4LD that you might also want to check out while you're awaiting an answer.

4 years out of a rebuilt A4LD? You got lucky. I had more luck just getting one out of a donor. I was lucky enough to have a cousin that knows someone in the towing business. They purchased a '94 Explorer to part out and I got there with the first $300. I haven't had any issues with it. My '92 ranger has had the auto out of it 3 times. The rebuilds just weren't working out long term. I think once they go south there is a lot of junk that gets in the valve body. There is also the fact that they usually only replace the broke stuff. Some of the other hard parts are on their way out, but look OK at the time of rebuild. That's not a slam on the transmission repair industry, it's just facts. We would probably do the same if we rebuilt them ourselves. If you're going to bust one open then you should maybe look at replacing all the major hard parts, buying a high end reman or finding a donor. Just my $.02.
