I have a 2010 Ford ranger and when the airflow selector is set to an outside air position it always blows cold air (air conditioned air) when it should be only outside air. ??
Not sure about your year but looking at the 2000 manual, if you have the selector switch set to floor/defrost or defrost, the AC will kick in automatically, depending on temp settings and if the blower motor is on. Suprised me the first time it happened to me.

The reason the defrost control turns on the A/C is to remove the moisture from the air inside the cab. It condenses on the coil and drips outside not sure why the A/C is on when you turn on the vent yea check and see if the A/C cycles when you turn it to vent
That's a new Ranger. Take it back to the dealer and have them look at it or read your manual. Call the dealer if you have a question. You gave them money not let them earn it!!! That's what I did when I bought my truck from the dealer. If I had a question I would call them unless I had to bring it in to have them look at something.
"outside air" doesn't mean that the a/c can't be on too. It just means that it is pulling fresh air from outside instead of recirculating what is already in the cabin. This isn't a problem with the truck.
