Just thought I'd drop a thread on the progress of my 2001 ranger which is in for major body, paint and cosmetic work.
I had the idea to replace the rear window with a smaller oval style window from days gone by. I found a piece and I mean a piece of what I believe was a 1948 -50 Chevy / GMC pick up at the local JY. I'm not real sure because all that was left of this truck was the frame and cab, no front sheet metal no doors, no windshield, no bed or fenders. Just the cab with the rear window still in place. I took a saws all and cut all around it to get as much flat metal as possible and brought it home.
This past week I finally tackled the window job, removed the original window and found that the truck had a nice 1/2' recessed lip all the way around the window, it was perfect to fit a replacement in. I measured it up and I had about 1 1/2' of extra metal top to bottom on the new window but was about 2' short in length. I trimmed the bottom sheet metal flat and square with the window frame and tacked a couple of strips of metal on the bottom of the sill that would flush up the new sheet metal when I set the new window in place. This worked great and I was then able to scribe a line across the inside top of the new sheet metal and then cut to fit. It fit after a few final grinds here and there and I stitch welded it in place, made up a couple of small filler panels on the end and weld ed them in for a finish.
With a little hammer and dolly work and some filler it looked like it belonged there.
Thanks for looking, it's a work in progress but I'm getting there. Check out my progress under the threat out Early Christmas for project " OUTRANGEROUS".
