I have been searching for answers to out of warranty questions and haven't found what I need.
Someone either here or on Generationedge, years ago, posted an answer to a warranty question stating that you can get an out of warranty repair for something like $500 if you are the orriginal owner.
If anyone here knows this topic, I would like to chat before having to sell my beloved truck.

I work for a Ford dealership as a tech, and we do every now and then do an AWA claim (after warranty adjustment) It all depends on how far over your warranty you are, how you maintain your truck, and what exactly the issue it. It is also kind of a dealership by dealership basis.

Going to need some more information on you exact problem.

I worked for Chevy before and I never have heard of anything like this. If it's out of waranty it is out. But if there is a secret, I will be willing to listen!!! My 99 Ranger has 71,000 miles on it and I bought it brand new in July of '99.

It is usually the sort of thing where you are JUST out of your warranty period (time or mileage wise) something like a 99...no way in hell.

I was a warranty admin for GM.....The General calls it "Goodwill".

Piddly crap, no. Engine, transmission, diff, EBTCM, etc, maybe.

It's essentially a call for the dealership, and then the area rep.

If it's a good customer, they had all their maintenance done like they were supposed to, etc, then often the customer can be assisted with a big dollar failure just after their warranty period.

Usually the General and the customer would split...one take parts, one take labour.

It really is up to the dealer, because usually the service department takes the hit. If it's a customer that has bought his last 10 cars there and will be into #11 soon, the sales department might be offered the opportunity to pick up the customer's share, or half of his share....

There is nothing in writing and it's a huge judgement call.

When GM cowboy'd up for a big chunk of change on a goodwill repair, it was normally something that should have lasted much longer than it did and isn't realistically expected to fail. (Engine, transmission...) never anything like an alternator or starter, power window motor, etc...

I've been out of the racket for 10 years, so it's possible things have changed....quite likely actually, now that just about everything has powertrain warranties right from the factory.

Yeah, you can get AWA repairs, but its usually something small or stupid that really shouldn't have happened and its a huge call on the part of the service manager.

I really doubt you will get anything on an 02. What is wrong with the truck?

Thank you for all the quality replies.
So, here is the deal. Bought an '01 XLT, put $15,000 down. Traded for the Edge in '02. Extended warranty ran out at, what? 70k I think. Got 110k on it now.
For the past 4 months have had a rough idle and periodic CEL's (misfire #3). Shortly after started tapping after getting on it a couple of times on the freeway. Tapping goes away after shutting down for a few minutes.
During diagnosis made it start tappin away. After examination with stethoscope sounds like it is valve at #4, probably exhaust.
Guess all I can do is take her on down there and see what they say. I can hear it now: Your flowmaster exhaust caused it to fail.

My truck is sick :annoyed:

So, anyway. I have been out of work for 2 years with a back injury, and I'm a single dad to boot. Been looking for work for 6 months now. Now if I get a job my truck will probably die on me leaving me more hosed. I'm stuck.
This truck has been very well taken care of. Am really disappointed it only lasted 8 years.

Honestly its probably not as bad as you think. I'd bet the tapping is a bad dump bucket, a cheap part that isn't too hard to replace (maybe more so for you with your injury, but still not terrible), the misfire is probably also something simple, a bad plug wire or sticking injector maybe.

Where are you located? There may be a member close to you who would be able and willing to help out.

One of my good friends owns a shop here in town. As soon as I get some extra cash I'm gonna have him take a look at it.
I am in San Luis Obispo California if any members are close by to look at it that would be swell.
