So here's a question.... 2.9L 3.73 open running 33". Motor has no trouble turning these boys although I notice a big difference in RPM and speedo reading. Motor doesnt seem to be getting in that high RPM range on 5th gear... pretty much worthless actually and 4th gear lasts forever. Want to gear to a 4.10 and have been looking at Exploder 8.8 but thats alot of welding that I will pay for. Any thoughts? Best course of action. :icon_confused:

33's and a 2.9......you need 4.56's.

You won't barely notice the difference between 3.73 and 4.10.

i concur....put 4.56's in the 7.5 and you wont have to cut and weld anything

if you decide to do the work though, some rangers come with 8.8's that have factory 4.56's, the code will be R8 on the door panel....then you'd just have to change out the front

Even 4.56 isn't quite enough, I'd go 4.88 myself on that engine.

Good luck ever finding one....even if they ever existed.

I know it does....doesn't mean they are out there tho. Call it a unicorn if you will.

Thanks for the input. Ill be visiting the local yard this weekend to see what they have. Should I be running 4.56 on the front as well? Being a DIFF newbie I am still educating myself so can I just pull the gears out of a rear and put them in the my D35 front?

you will need the same gear ratio in both front and rear axles if you every use your 4 wheel drive. different gears will tear things up in the drive train pretty fast. and you have a different axle in the front than in the back so you need the correct gear set for each axle.

check the Tech Library here on TRS and you'll find the axle info for your truck. lots of other great threads there to read as well, especially the gear/tire diameter chart to show tire sizes vs. gears for 60p mph cruising rpms.
