Heys guys got a question for you. When you jack the rear of the truck up, both tires are suppost to spin right? If you spin one side the other is suppost to spin with it as well right?

If you don't have a Posi it will either not spin or spin the opposite direction.

There are three items in every differential that spin. The left wheel, the right wheel, and the drive shaft. All three have different resting interia (the force that must be overcome to get an object at rest to move). Assuming it is an open rear end (no locker, no limited slip) they will not be mechanically bound to each other by anything but the gears in the rear end. So with this hypothetical open rear end if you grab any one of those items and spin one of the others will spin and one will stay still. Which does what is determined by the static inertia values. Normally the transmission is in gear (or park) giving the drive shaft the higher value and making the other wheel spin. If you didn't put the trans in gear it is a good bet the other wheel will sit still (because it is relatively heavy) and the driveshaft will be the item spinning.

Huh yea what he said:icon_confused:

lol Kimbcrwbr1, adsm08 I should have put I have a limited slip diff. That's why I asked that question. I think the rear is frigged up. It felt weird going down the road the other week. When I do over 55-60 mph the rear of the truck feels like its bouncing back there. More like a rough vibration than bouncing. I have checked everything I knew to check. Brakes, bearings, U-joints (gonna replace them anyways), shocks. Everything seems ok. I jacked the rear up and spun the passenger tire to see if I could hear anything abnormal and noticed the driver side was not turning. Thus the question. But you pretty much nailed it with your response. I am going to tear it apart here soon and see what is going on.

The limited slip clutch plates are most likely toasted, my 8.8 i bought from a J/Y was toasted when I got it. The clutch plates teeth that connect the plates to the carrier were broken off and floating around the rear! I didnt care becasue I replaced everything exept the housing.

You can likely just rebuild the limited slip but you may as well change your bearings while your in there if they are toasted.

With the truck in neutral and shot LS clutch packs it is pretty normal for only one tire to spin.

If the truck is in park or in gear and only one tire turns you have serious problems.

^Nice! I cant remember if I had it in gear or not. I want to say I did have it in gear because I remember pulling the parking brake off to let the tires spin and still having it in gear... I think. Oh well. I will double check if the rain will let up some but im like 65% sure it was in gear.

Yeah, limited slip rears (most of them) have clutches just like a manual transmission (well, more like an automatic transmission, but that is a different lesson) and when they wear down so far they won't grab anymore and then it will act like an open rear end.

Usually you will get a chattering noise and a grabby feeling in the rear when you turn before that.

Oh I know all about transmissions... I refuse to touch them anymore. Unless its a clutch, slave cylinder, flywheel, I will not touch one again. To many bad experiences. More like a curse. They hate me.
